About the Amish

The Amish people in America are an old religious sect, direct descendants of the Anabaptists of sixteenth-century Europe.  The Anabaptist Christians were known for challenging the reforms of Martin Luther and others during the protestant reformation.   Later known as Mennonites, a large group of Anabaptists fled to Switzerland and other remote areas of Europe to escape religious persecution.

During the late 1600’s, Jakob Ammann led a group away from the Mennonites because of differing beliefs and became the Amish.  The first sizable group to arrive in America around 1730 settled near Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  The Amish have settled in as many as twenty-four states, Canada, and Central America, though about 80% are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.

The Amish are best known for their simplistic lifestyle, plain dress codes and resistance to most forms of modernization.  There is generally a heavy emphasis on church and family relationships within Amish communities, and value a rural life.  Manual labor is one of the cornerstones of the Amish lifestyle through farming, craftsmanship, and artisan goods.
With a strong work ethic and aversion from electricity powered tools, the hand-made work that comes from the Amish community presents the opportunity to own something that was not mass produced and manufactured by a machine.  The quality of design and attention to detail all stem from the Amish-instilled humility of a true craftsman who develops a sense of fulfillment from perfecting their craft.  This is the type of quality you can expect in the furniture sold at Foothills Amish Furniture.   Quality, durability and comfort designed by hand.
